Job Description

research geophysicist in either the Moffett Field or Pasadena, CA, field office, to conduct research focused on crustal deformation and seismic hazard using Global Navigation Satellite Systems.


As a Research Geophysicist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Conceiving, planning, and conducting research on topics related to earthquake cycle deformation and seismic hazards.
  • Conducting research aimed towards constraining strain accumulation and release, earthquake rupture processes and sources of aseismic deformation using GNSS geodetic techniques.
  • Curating and utilizing rapid response datasets.
  • Advancing novel geodetic techniques such as Wave Glider-based seafloor surveying (GNSS-A), and optical measurements.
  • Mentoring and advising postdoctoral researchers conducting research on related topics in geodesy, crustal deformation, and earthquake physics.
  • Actively engaging with and communicating scientific results to external partners and end-users on topics related to ground deformation and seismic hazard.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: To be eligible for the Geophysicist GS-1313 series, applicants at all grade levels must satisfy the basic education requirement as outlined in A or B below.


A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR

B. A combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above

For GS-13:

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement listed above, applicants must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.
