What To ExpectTesla Factory Engineering is looking for a Staff Chemical Systems Design Engineer to join our Process Design team supporting our new gigafactory near Monterrey, Mexico. The Process Design team strives to create the factory of the future by bringing conceptual designs to life, producing cutting-edge detailed designs of chemical and utility systems that are fully integrated with Tesla’s advanced manufacturing processes.What You'll DoApply engineering fundamentals and a broad set of process engineering tools to solve technical problems and create novel detailed designs for various gas and chemical systems such as refrigerants, cryogenic gases, inert gases, viscous fluids, corrosive fluids, reactive fluids, and flammable fluidsLead front-end and detailed process designs for complex and program-level projects, including scope development, Basis of Design documentation, PFDs, P&IDs, 3D piping system design, pressure drop analysis and Pipe-Flo modeling, pressure relief valve calculations, equipment datasheets, Aspen simulation where required, and supporting Sequence of Operations / Controls Narrative documentsProvide technical expertise to the engineering/design team and other groups within Tesla as a subject matter expert (SME)Participate in commercial contracting activities, including development of scopes of work, evaluation of bid packages, performing bid analysis, competitive bid leveling, and working with Procurement to prepare commercial subcontractsParticipate in field construction and commissioning activities by serving as the point of contact for technical questions and real-time issue resolution, as well as maintaining master piping and equipment specificationsReview process design work performed by others on the Process Team to ensure every design maintains the highest level of quality, including P&ID’s, plan drawings, and single-line iso’sProvide process engineering support to facilities operations and manufacturing teams to help resolve process bottlenecks and other long-standing issues and mentor less experienced engineers on the teamWhat You'll BringBachelor’s of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university, or equivalent10+ years of experience in chemical process design, process improvement or operations within a high-tech industry such as semiconductor, specialty chemical, solar, battery, etc. Emphasis on design of new installations is required and a combination of experience with an owner/operator and an EPC firm is highly desiredRegistration as a Professional Engineer (Cédula Profesional) in Mexico is strongly preferred, or the ability to obtain comity licensure within 6 months may be accepted for exceptional candidatesSubject matter expertise related to Mexican codes, standards and regulations (NRF, NOM, NMX, PEMEX, etc.) and referenced North American / United States codes, standards, and regulations (API, ASME, ASME/BPVC, ASTM, ISO, NFPA, UL, etc.)Ability to lead or participate in reactive chemical process hazard evaluations and HAZOP reviews of PSM-covered and other hazardous chemical systemsBilingual fluency in Spanish and English is required. Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, and Pipe-Flo and Revit experience is a plusAbility to adapt, multi-task and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment with evolving changes in design requirements while maintaining a positive, “do the impossible” attitude and ability to communicate with peers and stakeholders at all levels including piping designers, stress engineers, other engineering disciplines, customers, and executives is essentialTesla
