Job Description

Duties

As a Wildlife Biologist your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Designs, analyzes, plans, manages and implements the biological programs, or a major segment of the programs, involving natural resources of significant national or international importance. Coordinates program activities with involved agencies, researchers, and other stakeholders.
  • Prepares issue papers, briefing documents, reports, and portions of management plans, and provides verbal briefings to Supervisor, Regional Directorate, and others regarding issues that could affect the ecological integrity of resources within Service jurisdiction.
  • Conducts on-site environmental assessments and completes the documentation necessary to determine if project proposals are compatible with station purpose.
  • Plans and carries out assignments, identifies solutions to problems, and coordinates program, survey and study designs with appropriate personnel to assure adequacy of designs and application of proper analytical procedures.

  • Supervisory Probationary Period: Selectees who have not previously completed a supervisory probationary period will be required to serve a one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period for this position.
  • Government Housing is required for this position.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 01/10/2022 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:

Degree: biological science that included:

  • At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
  • At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.

OR

Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Minimum Qualification [GS-12]

One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience may include lead in the management and monitoring of avian species of concern; independently conducting and/or coordinating ecosystem and wildlife research, which provided management recommendations; developing guidance and leading subordinate staff, volunteers and interns n biological duties including the creation or enhancement wildlife habitat, invasive species control, and biological surveys.

OR

Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
